Hillsboro and Hill County are in the flyway for the annual migration of Monarch butterflies. These insects play an important role in pollination of plants, including crops in agricultural production. The Hill County Master Gardeners have obtained a grant to support the life cycle of Monarch butterflies by planting milkweed. Milkweed is essential as a nesting location and food source in the life cycle of Monarch butterflies. The Hill County Master Gardeners have planted milkweed adjacent to one of the gazebos on the nature trail in Wallace Park, thereby creating an opportunity to observe Monarch butterflies in a natural setting.
